Dr. Bumsu Lee is an assistant professor in the School of Physics and Applied Physics at SIUC starting in Fall of 2019. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yonsei University, South Korea, and a Ph.D. degree in Physics from Rutgers University. Prior to the current position, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania and an NRC research associate working at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

Dr. Lee's research focuses on quantum optics and experimental condensed matter physics for solid-state quantum materials including 2D materials, topological materials and hybrid organic functional materials. Their exotic material properties can be  enhanced and tailored when they are coupled to nanoscience engineering and quantum technologies. His research aims to better understand fundamental physics of these materials, and to develop innovative and advanced photonics, opto-electronics, and quantum information applications from utilizing nanophotonics, plasmonics and quantum structures to overcome their existing disadvantages and limitations.
