Heather Brown
Heather Brown, DNP, MSN, RN serves as the Program Director for the School of Nursing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She joined the faculty in 2022 after several years of clinical nursing experience and has since served in a variety of leadership roles focused on nursing education, curriculum development, accreditation, and clinical partnerships.Dr. Brown earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from John A. Logan College in 2016, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University in 2018, a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management from Western Governors University in 2019, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Northern Kentucky University in 2024.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Brown worked in multiple healthcare settings, including assisted living, progressive care, and step-down intensive care. Her progression from Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN) and Charge Nurse provides her with a well-rounded perspective that she brings into both the classroom and the clinical environment.As Program Director, Dr. Brown is committed to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and student success while preparing the next generation of nurses to meet the evolving needs of healthcare.
Her work includes curriculum development, accreditation initiatives, faculty collaboration, and the cultivation of strong partnerships with clinical agencies to ensure meaningful, high-quality learning experiences for nursing students.Dr. Brown's scholarly interests focus on nursing education, student success, psychological well-being, and the transition of new graduate nurses into professional practice. She is passionate about creating engaging learning environments that strengthen clinical judgment, promote critical thinking, and build the confidence students need to become compassionate, competent nursing professionals.
